This historical image captures the 1957 flight of the Man High II balloon by Dr. David Simons. Taking off from Crosby’s Portsmouth Mine, the Man High II reached an altitude of 110,000 feet. During his 32-hour flight, Simmons was the first person to see the curvature of the earth from space while collecting valuable information on altitude effects on the human body, which was later used by NASA.
